2016 Chardonnay Estate

The Estate Chardonnay represents our entire planted acreage, thus provides the most complete expression of Chardonnay from our estate in each vintage.  We make our picking decisions with tension and vibrancy favored over opulence and richness, as we believe this gives us the best expression of our sense of place.   This wine will benefit from cellaring for at least three years and/or decanting a few hours ahead of time. 94 Points jamessuckling.com and 91 Points The Wine Advocate. 2018 Pinot Noir Aeolian

The Æolian has evolved in the seven vintages since we started making this wine, beginning as a means of expressing the ever-changing nature of our younger blocks and now settling in, as most things do at Bethel Heights, as a wine defined by ‘place’. The three blocks that sit high above the rest of the vineyard on the east side, planted in 2002, now make up this wine in its entirety. 93 Points jamessuckling.com,  Read more about the 2018 Aeolian Pinot Noir.

2018 Pinot Noir Estate

The Pinot Noir Estate is always the best place to start when evaluating our success or shortcoming in any given vintage. It incorporates nearly all of our estate vineyard in various amounts, and as such provides an honest evaluation of the year. The 2018 Estate is dense and powerful, reflecting the warm growing season we experienced, the naturally small crop, and small berry size throughout almost the entire vineyard. 93 Points, jamessuckling.comRead more about the 2018 Estate Pinot Noir.

2018 Pinot Noir Hope Well Vineyard

Hope Well Wine is a project of Mimi Casteel, a member of the Bethel Heights family. The Pinot noir came in on a cool morning, and so enjoyed a few days of ambient soak before pushing a cap. Due to the concentration of the vintage, the cap management consisted primarily of gentle cap wetting and one or two pumpovers to ensure a clean fermentation before pressing at dryness. No commercial yeasts or bacteria were used. Read more about the 2018 Hope Well Pinot Noir.

2019 Pinot Noir Rose

This Rosé comes from our oldest Pinot noir planting at Bethel Heights, own-rooted Wädenswil vines planted in 1977.   Picked early, whole cluster pressed to avoid extraction of tannin, fermented cool in stainless steel with no malolactic fermentation, and voilà – a bright, refreshing wine that captures the essence of summer, with all the aromatic complexity of Pinot noir but with the lighter body of an elegant aromatic white wine. Casteel Pinot and Chardonnay Red, White and Blue Set

The Casteel Red, White and Blue set includes a bottle each of our 2017 Casteel Pinot Noir and our 2016 Casteel Chardonnay. In 2002 we took a new path and produced our first Casteel Pinot Noir, and similarly in 2011 our Casteel Chardonnay, a blend of barrels from several different blocks, selected to express the epitome of that particular vintage at Bethel Heights. This is our only wine that carries our family name rather than a place name, which gives us considerable poetic license to select our favorite barrels from each vintage.  The 2017 Casteel Pinot Noir 95 Points James Suckling. 2016 Casteel Chardonnay 95 Points Wine Advocate; 96 Points James Suckling.

2016 Chardonnay Justice Vineyard

The Chardonnay from Justice Vineyard over the years has developed a haunting sea breeze, saline quality both in the aroma and on the palate that distinguishes it from every other Chardonnay in our portfolio. The wine’s freshness, purity, and unique fingerprint are framed by bright acidity and a crystalline structure, perhaps providing a window into the marine sedimentary soils where it’s planted, soils that were once layers of sand on the floor of the ocean millions of years ago. 2016 Chardonnay Casteel

Our family name on this reserve Chardonnay is our license to choose our personal favorite lots from the vintage and give them the luxury of a long slow fermentation in barrique. In 2016 we reserved 6 barrels plus a puncheon from our oldest Chardonnay vines, the Wente selection planted in 1977, plus two barrels from Justice Vineyard, Dijon clone 76, planted in 1999. It is a unique blend in the history of our Casteel Chardonnay, yielding a wine of purity and freshness with outstanding structure and concentration. 95 Points Wine Advocate and 96 Points jamessuckling.com, Read more about the 2016 Casteel Chardonnay.

2017 Chardonnay Hope Well Vineyard

Hope Well Wine is a project  of Mimi Casteel, a member fo the Bethel Heights family. The inaugural Chardonnay from Hope Well is such an exciting landmark in the vineyard. We planted Chardonnay after much of the Pinot Noir was asserting the ‘personality’ of its home, and chose our favorite sites based on what we were learning from the Pinot. For young fruit it was very assertive and distinct. The grapes were pressed cold and went to barrel without settling, each barrel was hand filled and received the same amount of solids from the press. The next morning the barrels were bubbling, so they were tucked into a cool spot to ferment. Malolactic started before primary was finished, and throughout it was clear that Hope Well has a distinct signature for Chardonnay as well as Pinot noir. No commercial yeasts or bacteria were used. 2017 Pinot Noir Flat Block

Since its first separate bottling in 1991, the Flat Block has always been the standard of grace and purity at Bethel Heights, a stark contrast to its sibling block that sits just below, the sometimesrowdy Southeast Block. We treat the Flat Block as gently as possible, keeping fermentations cool and extraction minimal to maintain aromatic intensity and complexity, and to preserve freshness and vibrancy.95 Points jamessuckling.com, 92 Points Wine Enthusiast, Cellar Selection Read more about the Flat Block Pinot Noir.

2017 Pinot Noir Southeast Block

The Southeast Block has always been defined by mutability; from the grace and purity that defined the 90s to the power and structure that became the norm in the 00s, it has resisted clear definition. The 2017 is as lissome and graceful a version of this block as I can recall. Its delicate red fruits are framed by integrated acidity and a thin veil of gossamer tannin that carries the wine to a long, balanced finish. I can say without hyperbole that of all the bottlings in which I have had the pleasure to play a part, the 2017 Southeast Block is my favorite. 94 Points jamessuckling.com, 93 Points Wine EnthusiastRead more about the Southeast Block Pinot Noir.
