Our family name on this reserve Chardonnay is our license to choose our personal favorite lots from the vintage and give them the luxury of a long slow fermentation in barrique, yielding a wine of purity and freshness with outstanding structure and concentration. In 2014 the wine came from a single lot, our Bethel Heights Vineyard Dijon selection 76, planted 1994. When the lines begin to blur, you get layers of geologic and orgnaic evolution, patterns of wind and sun, all running crosswise and sideways to your neat grid of lines and squares. The Cauldron is one of three Pinot Noirs in the Beyond the Block Series of wines. This wine represents the bowl, or hot pot where the southeast and south blocks meet.

The Currents: There is a certain place on the lower westside of our vineyard where subtle fluctuations of cool and warm air currents flow through the vines.  We feel them when we walk there in the summer, as if we were stepping into the sea, and we can taste them in the wine. The Æolian has evolved in the seven vintages since we started making this wine, beginning as a means of expressing the ever-changing nature of our younger blocks and now settling in, as most things do at Bethel Heights, as a wine defined by ‘place’.
